FITNESS AND WELLNESS

Sports Centre: Durham University was named the Sports University of the Year in 2023 and regularly ranks second in sporting achievements out of all British Universities.  A majority of Durham students participate in sport at college or University level and a wide variety of sports are on offer.  The main sports facilities are at Maiden Castle (about a ten-minute walk from the Conference venue – further from Durham City). The extensive facilities available can be found here.

We have arranged for ISEMPH participants to be able to use Durham University’s gym facilities at a rate of £21 for the entire time of the Conference or you can use a day rate. You will need to create a temporary account with the Sports Centre to be able to use the facilities and the link to do that can be found here.

Walking and Running: There are a number of fabulous places to walk and run around the City especially along the River Wear (where it is reasonably flat).  Information about various routes can be found here. Access to the River Bank is very easy from any of the hotels on offer and it is not too far from the College dorm rooms. Some suggestions for running trails in and around Durham can be found here.

Other Recreational Opportunities:  It is possible to hire recreational rowing boats along the River Wear from Browns Boats or take a river cruiser for a short trip along the Wear.

Wellness Room: During the ISEMPH 2024 meetings, there will be a Wellness Room available for anyone who wants to take time out and find a quiet space. More information on its location will be provided later.
