Celebrate Evolutionary Medicine Publications with Oxford University Press (Wednesday)

Join us for an evening buffet celebrating the many books and our journal published with Oxford University Press. We would also like to honour long-time Senior Commissioning Editor at OUP, Ian Sherman, with whom many ISEMPH people have interacted and who has recently retired from his post.

Movie Night (Thursday)

Come and watch the new 2024 biopic about Robert (Bob) Trivers called 'Wild Genius' which we will be showing along with the film's producer, Susan Kucera, who will be at the screening in person to answer any questions from the audience about the making of the film.  You can munch on popcorn while watching the movie and then eat pizza afterwards and buy an ice-cream from a traditional British ice-cream truck.

Harmonising Nature and Performance: The Balbir Singh Dance Company's Journey

Three Events on Thursday Afternoon

Half way through any conference, you are probably feeling tired of sitting all day long in a lecture room, so we have scheduled some unique events to break up the week. Each event is fairly close to the other so you could go to all three if you are feeling energetic. A campus map will be provided.

Palaeopathology Lab at Durham: join in attending supervised visits to the Lab run by Durham academics from the Dept of Archaeology. Here, you can see some of the teaching and research collections of individual skeletons excavated from rescue archaeology sites in advance of building and development in the UK. You will be able to view examples of Paget's Disease, treponemal diseases, and medical treatments that have all left marks on human bone. The remains of these past people in the UK continue to provide important information concerning health and disease, as well as care and treatment in the past. They also help to train the next generation of bioarchaeologists.

Oriental Institute:  The Museum will be showing a small collection of artefacts relating to health and disease. You can also tour the rest of the Museum's collections focusing on the art and archaeology of North Africa and parts of Asia. Entrance is free.

Botanical Gardens:  In the lovely setting of the Botanical Gardens, enjoy a free performance of the Balbir Dance Company with Artist in Residence, Balbir Singh, at Durham University's Hatfield College and the Wolfson Research Institute for Health and Wellbeing. Wander around the Botanical Gardens in (hopefully) fine weather and grab some coffee and a snack from the cafe (purchase required).
