BEAMISH: THE LIVING MUSEUM OF THE NORTH
Beamish is a world-famous, open-air, living museum which brings the history of North East England to life during the 19th century during the Industrial Revolution when mining and other industries were prevalent in the northeast of England. It is located ten miles north of Durham (about 23 minutes by road). Beamish includes the1820s Pockerley Hall, 1900s Town, 1900s Pit Village, 1940s Farm, 1950s Town and 1950s Spain’s Field Farm exhibit areas. Visitors to the museum meet costumed folk and discover fascinating stories of everyday life in the region through time. This is a wonderful day out for individuals, and families.

The excursion merits a full day's visit and is scheduled for Monday, 5th August, 2024 leaving in the morning.
Entry fees at a specially negotiated group rate including return travel by coach:

VINDOLANDA

Vindolanda was built around 85 CE and is situated along the northern frontier of Roman Britain just to the south of Hadrian's Wall which was constructed 40 years later. Roman garrisons drawn from different parts of Europe were stationed here for over 400 years. Remains are exceptionally preserved with several wooden, leather and other organic artefacts recovered in excellent condition. Recovered tablets have allowed a reconstruction of everyday life at the site. At Vindolanda, you can find remnants of roads, buildings (including a bathhouse) as well as a world class museum using the latest interpretation techniques and displays. This will be a half-day trip scheduled to leave in the morning of Tuesday, 6th August and returning in time for the ISEMPH reception at Durham's Cathedral. Travel time is just over an hour (Vindolanda is 50 miles from Durham)Entry fees at a specially negotiated group rate:

TOUR OF DURHAM CATHEDRAL

Durham Cathedral was founded in 995 CE but the current building is primarily an 11^th to 13^th century structure when various additions were constructed such as the Galilee Chapel. It is one of the best examples of Romanesque architecture and is part of Durham’s UNESCO heritage site. The remains of one of the earliest Christian Saints, Saint Cuthbert (34-87 CE), is buried in part of the Cathedral (authenticated by various historical texts and inspections of his tomb in earlier times).

ISEMPH’s welcome reception will be held in the Cathedral Cloisters at 18:15 on Tuesday, 6^th August. Before the Reception, we will be running tours of the Cathedral (a maximum of 20 people per group) at 16:00 lasting an hour. The Cathedral Choir will be practising at the same time, so this is an opportunity to hear some wonderful singing. Note that part of the tour gives you the opportunity to climb the central tower (325 steps up a small winding stone staircase). You can opt out of this if you wish. Following the tour, ISEMPH participants are invited to join Evensong at 17:30 in the Cathedral which is an evocative and interesting service regardless of your faith. All are welcome.
